This semester I guess in a broad category I want to
be able to spice up my sentences in the essays that I will write in my future. By
spicing up, I mean adding different punctuations such as: dashes, semicolons,
and hyphens while also being able to use different sentence structures. Though
what I listed are not the only punctuations I want to be able to use and use
effectively, but there are many more that I want to be able to master. I believe
that by having these in my paper I will be able to engage the reader more
because they will see where I want to emphasize at and bring more attention to.
By having different sentence structure such as
short sentences will help me to not only add variety to papers, but will help
me emphasize points that I want to make. Though, the problem I feel I may have
with using short sentences is that done improperly they can make your paper
sound as if you don’t know the rules to writing. Being able to find the middle
will help me to improve my writing abilities.
Other than short sentences, I also want to improve on using longer
sentence to enhance my paper. In an article that I read in one of my classes
the other wrote the entire article in one run on sentence. I found this to be
an interesting way to write because it causes the reader to not only read your
work, but also speculate on the reasoning behind the use of a long sentence. By
adding this type of variety not only will it improve my writing as a student,
but can be useful in my years of teaching.
Beside punctuation I want to be able to work on my
tone when I write papers. The reason being is because I feel like my voice gets
lost in a paper and turns to something formal where I wanted the opposite
effect. I believe this happens because I
try to use multiple sources of evidence to support my claim that I’m making in
the paper then my paper becomes driven strictly by evidence and less about my
analysis of the evidence. Being able to use different tones whether formal or
not, it will benefit me in the way that my message gets across to the readers. The
reason is because in writing, only using a formal tone in a paper that is
supposed to be more relaxed turns the reader away and makes them less engaged. The
way I think one can improve tone is by adding more of their own opinion in
their piece of work paired with different writing punctuation. Using both of
those together can ultimately drive ones paper to be something that is more personalized.
Overall, I want to use this class to help me
improve in most aspects of grammar and punctuation. Having these skills I will be able to write at
a higher level and also translate these skills to the students I plan on
teaching.
